Mio padre e mia madre non parlavano, preferivano far vedere a me e a
Badia a Settimo - piacevole località dove abitiamo - a Firenze,
"
It is joy

My story with the Crib starts very early in
my life and almost certainly it was helped by a precise geographic reason:
my family – daddy,
mummy and my brother Cesare, lived for eleven years near Assisi, the town
which had become the preferred pleasure choice for Sunday outings. My
father should have moved to Assisi for work reasons, but preferred
Florence to be able to stay near the daughter who had decided to take
a course in
foreign Language and Literature at the University.
Even now I ask myself what would have become of me had I gone to live
in Assisi (probably I would have dedicated myself to prayers rather than
the
family).
Leaving aside the ifs, let’s go back to Christmas, the magic feast,
the feast of colours, of the lights, of the decorated trees, of the parcels
to unwrap, of Father Christmas, of the snow... but above all, what I was
waiting for was the trip to Assisi at Christmas, in (let me use this word)
pilgrimage to the Cribs, a pilgrimage that would start at Saint Francis’ Basilica
to reach to the church dedicated to Saint Claire, up to the castle. Then
I would enjoy the cascading water, seeing the sun give place to the
moon and the stars, the comet, the shepherds, the falling snow, I would
look
at the Baby Jesus, Saint Joseph, The Madonna, the ox and the donkey
in that shack: in every shack there was a miracle, the miracle of the
Nativity.
My father and my mother would not talk, they preferred to let Cesare
and me see, and I was living that experience with the eyes of a child
without
understanding many things, but I was happy, very happy.
After many years as an adult I went back to Assisi, just before becoming
a mother, and seeing again the Cribs I felt again a feeling, more aware
this time, of the great mystery of the Nativity.
Baby Jesus is the Word made flesh, Jesus came to this earth to take
part in all and everything, except in sin, our human condition.
Today,
mother of two little ones – Sara, who was born few days before
Christmas on 20th December 1989, and Nadia who was born on 22nd October
1991, I ask myself what can I do to transmit that love, that joy that
my parents gave me, beyond the presents, beyond the curiosity of the
parcels
to unwrap, beyond the lights of the tree and beyond the sweets. And
it is perhaps for this reason that I have tried to re-map an itinerary
of
the Cribs, trying to wander in the universe…from Badia a Settimo
- charming place where we live - to Florence, more than extraordinary "incredible" city,
to Toscana, to the Umbria lands…in the sky, where still today
- despite the pollution - we can, with the naked eye, see the Cancer
constellation
including a heap of stars, that was given the name of "Presepio" or
of "Greppia". Thinking about these stars Plinio il Vecchio
used to say: "Sunt in signa Cancri duae stellae parve aselli appellatae,
I so discovered that he who builds a Crib is often a poet, a singer
of love and sweetness, because that great love mystery, that miracle
of
the Nativity, can bring peace and love to all men of good will and
glory to
the highest in the skies.
